Rosatom completes 8.4 bln ruble update to Smolensk-2 CHPP

SMOLENSK. May 14 (Interfax) - Rosatom Infrastructure Solutions, a division of Russian state corporation Rosatom, has completed the modernization of the Smolensk-2 combined heat-and-power plant at a cost of more than 8.4 billion rubles, boosting its capacity by 15%, Smolensk Region Governor Vasily Anokhin said.

"Two turbine units that had expended their service life were replaced with modern units as part of the modernization. The work was done in two stages. The second turbine unit with capacity of 126 MW has been put into operation and is already delivering electricity into the Unified Energy System of Russia. The first, with capacity of 130 MW, was launched earlier, in 2025," Anokhin said on his Max channel.

The project was carried out by the Rosatom division with support from state corporation VEB.RF and involved comprehensive updates to generating facilities at a cost of more than 8.4 billion rubles, Anokhin said. The main equipment was manufactured by domestic plants.

The modernization of the plant began in 2023 and called for installing two new turbine units to increase the plant's installed electricity and heating capacity to 320 MW and 815 Gcal/h, respectively, from 275 MW and 774 Gcal/h.

The Smolensk-2 CHPP, which went into operation in January 1973, generates and transports electricity and heating. The plant produces 85% of the thermal energy for Smolensk's centralized heating system.
