Construction work begun on walls for reactor No. 3 of Kursk 2 Nuclear Power Plant
VORONEZH. May 8 (Interfax) - Specialists have finished pouring the concrete foundation at the third reactor unit at Kursk 2 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and have begun building the walls, the plant's communications department reported.
"At the construction site of Reactor Unit No. 3 of Kursk 2 NPP (the chief designer and building contractor is the engineering division of Rosatom), one of the key tasks of the year has been completed - the concrete foundation slab of the reactor building. The process took four months and was completed ahead of schedule," the statement says.
All of th e stages of the concrete pouring were subject to multi-level quality control.
"The completion of the concrete foundation slab of the reactor building is an important stage in construction after which the armored reactors will begin to be installed and the concrete for the walls of the main building of the reactor unit poured," Alexander Khazin, director of JSC Atomstroyexport's construction project for reactors No. 3 and No. 4 of Kursk 2 NPP, is quoted as saying in the press release.
Construction work at Kursk 2 NPP is currently underway at two reactor units - No. 2 and No. 3. As reported, the first VVER-TOI reactor at Kursk 2 NPP was commissioned at the end of April this year and is the most powerful reactor in Russia. Since it was connected to the grid in 2025, it has generated 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
According to the Russia's general energy development plan, four new units with a total capacity of 5,000 MW will be built here, after which the power plant will complete the move to a new generation of reactors.
The construction of reactor units No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 at Kursk 2 NPP, equipped with VVER-TOI reactors, is part of the general plan for the placement of electricity generation facilities in Russia before 2042, approved by the Russian government in December 2024. A total of 38 new reactor units are to be built in Russia during this period.
