Azerbaijani Milli Majlis suspending cooperation with European Parliament

BAKU. May 4 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (parliament) decided on Friday to suspend cooperation with the European Parliament due to anti-Azerbaijani actions of its members.

In addition, the Azerbaijani parliament stops participating in the activity of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.

"Consistent with the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly Charter, a procedure is initiated to terminate the Milli Majlis membership in that organization, and during this procedure the Milli Majlis delegation will take no part in EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly events," the parliament said in its decision.

Azerbaijani parliament speaker Sahiba Gafarova said on Friday that the European Parliament policy had been anti-Azerbaijani over the past decade. "The anti-Azerbaijani rhetoric noticeably intensified in the European Parliament after the Second Karabakh War [in fall 2020]. Thirteen resolutions targeting Azerbaijan have been adopted since then. The Milli Majlis cannot be silent about the biased activity of the European Parliament against our country," she said.

Azerbaijani presidential aide and Presidential Administration's Foreign Policy Department head Hikmet Hajiyev said that the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday puts up obstacles to the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. "At a time when steps are being taken to foster peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, adopting such a decision one day after the Azerbaijani deputy prime minister's visit to Armenia is nothing short of a diplomatic disgrace," the Report news agency quoted Hajiyev as saying.

He added that Baku views the European Parliament's actions as destructive, provocative, and an attempt to drag the region back into war.

Earlier on Friday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry summoned EU Ambassador in Baku Marijana Kujundzic and issued a note protesting against the European Parliament resolution of April 30 with "unfounded and biased" provisions regarding Azerbaijan.
