Czech Republic interested in oil, uranium supplies from Kazakhstan - PM

ASTANA. April 29 (Interfax) - The Czech Republic is interested in securing long-term supplies of oil and uranium from Kazakhstan, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said during a visit to Astana.

"We view Kazakhstan as a strategic partner and are confident that, through joint efforts, we can expand bilateral trade. Our priority is to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, particularly by securing long-term oil supplies. Kazakhstan is also of great interest to us as the world's largest uranium producer, given that our energy strategy relies on nuclear power," Babis is quoted as saying in a statement released by the Kazakh president's press service.

Babis sees the visit as a starting point for elevating bilateral relations to a new level.

The prime minister also said Kazakhstan had built a resilient energy security system based on a diversified power generation mix.

Separately, Babis confirmed that Czech companies are ready to participate in joint energy projects.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the Czech Republic was one of Kazakhstan's key trading partners in the European Union.

"Trade is showing positive momentum. We will continue to facilitate the expansion of trade and economic ties," he said.

Tokayev said more than 190 Czech companies were currently operating in Kazakhstan, including major investors such as Skoda, Omnipol, Tatra, Excalibur Army (EA), ZVVZ and other long-standing industrial partners.

"I assure you that Kazakhstan offers broad opportunities for joint projects," Tokayev said.

Kazakhstan is one of the top five oil exporters to the Czech Republic, supplying more than 1 million tonnes in 2025.
