Inter RAO participating in pilot project to develop digital ruble, working on electricity payment transactions

MOSCOW. April 28 (Interfax) - Inter RAO is participating in a pilot project to implement and develop the digital ruble, the energy company said in its draft annual report for 2025.

The company, together with Russian banks, has successfully implemented a set of transactions and perfected key operations for paying for electricity in digital rubles. Specifically, the Unified Information and Payment Center of St. Petersburg, part of Inter RAO, and VTB have successfully completed the first payment for Unified Information and Payment Center services in Russia in digital rubles, according to the report.

The digital ruble is the third form of Russian national currency that the Central Bank of Russia plans to issue in addition to existing forms of money, cash and non-cash. The Central Bank has been conducting a pilot project with digital rubles since August 15, 2023. As of the end of 2025, the number of individual accounts opened on the digital ruble platform as part of the pilot project totaled more than 2,600, while the number of legal entity accounts exceeded 130, according to the Central Bank.
