Russian deputy PM, Congolese president discuss economic cooperation

MOSCOW. April 17 (Interfax) - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak has met with Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso on a visit to the country to discuss cooperation prospects in a wide range of areas, including energy, trade, economy, finance, banking, manufacturing and transport, the Russian government's press service said.

A day earlier Novak attended Nguesso's inauguration ceremony.

In particular, the two sides discussed the prospects of implementing joint projects to upgrade Congo's port, rail, river transport and airport infrastructure, the Russian Transport Ministry's press service said. The Russian delegation will work out possible formats for participating in promising projects in Congo, including those concerning technical and strategic consulting and the professional education and training of Congolese transport personnel.

The sides "noted readiness to gradually increase their transport cooperation. The Republic of Congo is seen as a key logistics hub in Central Africa and a crucial participant in a promising international transport route between Russia and the African continent," the statement said.

"Russia and the Republic of Congo have a huge potential to further develop their relations in a variety of areas: from economy and trade to education, healthcare, science and culture. I am certain that today's meeting will become another step towards enhancing our strategic partnership," Novak said.

He also held talks with Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso to discuss the prospects of trade, economic and social-sector cooperation.
