Turkmenistan, UN intend to strengthen cooperation in sustainable tourism - Foreign Ministry
ASHGABAT. April 15 (Interfax) - Interaction in sustainable tourism was discussed in a meeting between Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister Myakhri Byashimov and Cordula Wohlmuther, director a.i. of the UN Tourism Regional Department for Europe, who has arrived to attend an international exhibit and the TurkmenTravel - 2026 conference in Ashgabat, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said on its website on Wednesday.
The meeting addressed the implementation of agreements reached earlier, including issues related to promoting the tourist potential of Turkmenistan, infrastructure development, personnel training, and others.
Special attention was given to the prospects of interaction within the framework program of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in 2026-2030.
The Turkmen side welcomed the declaration of year 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism and the launch in January 2026 of a corresponding roadmap for its implementation.
Promising cooperation tracks include digitalization and innovations, attracting investment, creating new jobs, increasing the stability of the tourism industry, and preserving cultural and natural heritage.
The meeting participants reaffirmed Turkmenistan's readiness for more active participation in the UN Tourism elected entities and discussed issues related to the participation of a Turkmen delegation in the 72nd session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the ministry said.
