Kazakhstan's energy system achieves generation surplus in Q1 - Energy Ministry
ASTANA. April 10 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's energy system showed stable positive dynamics in key indicators in Q1 2026, the Kazakh Energy Ministry's press service said.
According to the agency's operational data, electricity production in the country amounted to 33.7 billion kWh in January-March this year, while consumption was 33.6 billion kWh. "Thus, a generation surplus of 100 million kWh has been ensured, which confirms the balanced operation of the energy system," the press service said.
Kazakhstan plans to commission 2.6 GW of traditional and renewable energy capacity in 2026, it said. In particular, four combined-cycle gas turbine units (CCGTs), two wind farms and four solar power plants will be commissioned this year. The development program also provides for the expansion of two existing power plants.
"The implementation of these projects will make it possible to fully resolve the issue of energy shortages in the country by the end of the first quarter of 2027, and to achieve a sustainable electricity surplus by 2029," the Energy Ministry said.
It was previously reported that Kazakhstan plans to commission 7.8 GW of new and modernized capacity under the national project for the development of generation until 2030.
Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov previously said that the country currently still has an electricity deficit during peak hours, which is covered by imports. According to his information, the deficit was reduced 29% last year, but remains significant.
