Astana, Seoul discuss South Korean role in developing Kazakhstan's nuclear energy

ASTANA. April 9 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan and South Korea have discussed Korean companies' potential involvement in developing Kazakhstan's nuclear energy sector, the Kazakh Atomic Energy Agency said.

Prospects for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including the nuclear fuel cycle and research and workforce training, were discussed at a meeting on Thursday between the agency's head Almassadam Satkaliyev and South Korean Trade, Industry and Resources Minister Kim Jung-Kwan.

"Both sides confirmed their interest in strengthening strategic ties and expanding practical cooperation," the agency said.

They also discussed nuclear and radiation safety, the application of international standards and the exchange of regulatory best practices.

The South Korean side noted the potential for joint projects and expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Kazakhstan.

The sides reaffirmed their readiness to continue cooperation in the nuclear sector.
