Baku, Athens discuss gas supplies via TAP, expansion of cooperation in energy

BAKU. April 6 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan and Greece have reviewed issues of gas supply and the possibilities for cooperating on green energy, the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry said.

These issues were discussed during a meeting between Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and the Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan, Maria Papakonstantinou.

It was noted that overall, since the commissioning of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) (on December 31, 2020), Azerbaijan has exported 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas to Greece. Last year, 1.1 bcm were supplied.

During the meeting, possibilities for cooperation in green energy, energy efficiency and innovative technologies were also discussed.

The parties also discussed the next meeting of the joint commission on economic, industrial and technological cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece, which will be held in Athens in autumn this year.

The Greek side also received an invitation to participate in the events of Baku Energy Week, which will take place from June 1 to 3.

Azerbaijan has gas supply contracts with 16 countries, 13 of which are in Europe - Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, North Macedonia, Germany, Ukraine and Austria.

Among these, long-term contracts with fixed supply amounts have been signed with three countries (Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria) and with Germany's SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe) for a period of ten years, with the annual amount gradually increasing to 15 TWh, which equates to around 1.5 bcm. Contracts without exact purchase amounts have been signed with the remaining countries.
