Fire at Russia's NKNC caused by explosion of gas mixture at synthetic rubber production facility

KAZAN. March 31 (Interfax) - The fire at PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNC, part of SIBUR) on Tuesday was caused by the ignition of a gas mixture followed by an explosion at the synthetic rubber production facility, the company's press service said.

"During work to eliminate the consequences of equipment depressurization at Nizhnekamskneftekhim's synthetic rubber production facility, ignition of a gas mixture occurred from a source not yet identified, followed by an explosion," the press service said.

"The main production units of Nizhnekamskneftekhim are unaffected and continue to operate," the company said.

NKNC's press service clarified that the fire has been contained, and the residual fire is being extinguished. There is no risk of the fire spreading further, as the plant has completed routine equipment shutdowns and other necessary safety procedures, according to the statement.

The company said that 20 of the injured have been hospitalized.

A hotline has been established to provide psychological and other support to plant employees, contractors, and their families.

The company said that no threat to residents or the environment has been identified. The results of the air quality measurements will be published on NKNC's website and official social media accounts.

As reported, an equipment failure followed by a fire occurred at Nizhnekamskneftekhim on Tuesday. According to SIBUR, the incident has resulted in two deaths and 72 injuries, 64 of which sustained minor injuries.

Nizhnekamskneftekhim is one of the largest producers of synthetic rubber globally and plastics in Russia. It has been part of SIBUR petrochemical holding since October 2021.
