KazMunayGas, China National Petroleum Corp launch urea project in Aktobe Region
ASTANA. March 31 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG) and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) have begun implementing a urea (carbamide) production project in the Aktobe Region, KMG CEO Askhat Khasenov said.
"KMG, together with CNPC, has launched a project for urea production in the Aktobe Region. The design capacity of the new plant, which is targeted for commissioning by 2029, is 800,000 tonnes of urea a year," Khasenov said at a government meeting on Tuesday.
As reported earlier, KMG and CNPC are carrying out a project to construct a gas chemical complex in the Mugalzhar District of the Aktobe Region to produce urea. Total investment is estimated at $1.25 billion.
The new facility will be located near the Zhanazhol gas processing plant, which is expected to supply up to 600 million cubic meters of marketable gas per year.
Kazakhstan does not currently produce urea, with farmers' demand met entirely through imports. The new facility is designed to satisfy the domestic market fully, with demand projected at approximately 300,000 tonnes annually by 2029. Excess production will be exported to priority markets, including the European Union, Turkey, and India.
The official exchange rate as on March 31, 2026, is 481.54 tenge/$1.
