Murmansk Bulker Terminal begins receiving orders for transshipment of fertilizers from Baltic port clients due to ice on Baltic Sea

MURMANSK. March 5 (Interfax) - Murmansk Bulker Terminal LLC (MBT, managed by JSC Port Alliance) has concluded a contract for the urgent delivery of 100,000 tonnes of potash fertilizers with a shipper which previously worked with ports of the Baltic basin, the terminal's press service said.

"Due to the difficult ice conditions in the Gulf of Finland, one of the large exporters, in order not to disrupt the fulfillment of commercial obligations to the cargo recipient, approached MBT with a proposal to handle two vessel lots of 50,000 tonnes each," the press service said.

During March, the fertilizers are to be sent to a recipient in South Africa.

To fulfill the order, Supramax bulk carriers with a deadweight of up to 65,000 tonnes will be used.

As reported, MBT began handling potash fertilizers, without disclosing the shippers, in December last year with the dispatch of vessels to South America. According to MBT, the route via Murmansk is a reliable alternative to the congested ports of the Baltic and a promising direction for the development of Russian exports.

The daily level of potash fertilizer transshipment at MBT exceeds 16,000 tonnes.

In 2025, MBT transshipped 2.8 million tonnes of cargo, down 28.2% compared to 2024.

MBT is located within the boundaries of the seaport of Murmansk on the shore of the Kola Bay. The company is engaged in the transshipment of apatite concentrate and mineral fertilizers (ammophos, carbamide, diammonium phosphate, nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers). The terminal is capable of receiving Capesize and Panamax class vessels, has three berths, and the total length of the berth line is 677 meters. The processing capacity of MBT is 8.7 million tonnes per year.

Established in March 2024, JSC Port Alliance includes, in addition to MBT, JSC Murmansk Commercial Seaport , Murmansk Container Terminal LLC, Tuapse Bulk Terminal LLC, JSC Daltransugol (DTU), and Maly Port Stevedoring Company LLC in Nakhodka. The combined capacity of the five assets exceeds 53 million tonnes of cargo per year.
