European Parliament approves Commission's proposal on 90-bln-euro financing for Ukraine for 2026-2027
BRUSSELS. Feb 11 (Interfax) - Members of the European Parliament voted in favor of a 90-billion-euro loan for Ukraine for 2026-2027 at a plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
The European Commission's proposal was approved by 458 European parliamentarians, with 140 votes against and 44 abstentions.
Materials prepared for the European Parliament meeting indicated that 26 member states had instructed the Commission on October 23, 2025 to submit a proposal on providing financial support to Ukraine as soon as possible, and the Commission proposed options for such financing. The European Council agreed to disburse 90 billion euros to Ukraine in 2026-2027 by borrowing this amount on a capital market under the EU budget's guarantee and on the premise that it would be repaid through reparations to be received from Russia.
It was stipulated that 60 billion of the 90 billion euros is to be spent on Ukraine's defense needs.
The EU Council is now supposed to adopt a final formal decision regulating the issuing of the loan.
