Cargo flow along Zangezur Corridor could reach 865,000 TEU by 2040 - Azerbaijani deputy PM
BAKU. Feb 6 (Interfax) - The cargo flow along the Zangezur Corridor could reach 865,000 TEU by 2040, Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov said at the New Silk Road forum in Dubai, as cited by the Azerbaijani government.
"In his speech, Sharifov noted the strategic importance of the Zangezur Corridor, known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). He reported that this project, along with creating reliable communication between Europe and Central Asia, has the potential to provide a cargo flow of 865,000 TEU [twenty-foot equivalent units] by 2040," the government said.
Cargo transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, increased 11% in 2025, and 12% along the International North-South Transport Corridor, Sharifov said.
As a result of the modernization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, its annual capacity has reached 5 million tonnes, and work is currently underway to increase the cargo handling capacity of the Baku International Sea Trade Port to 25 million tonnes per year, he said. Last year, container transportation at the Baku port increased 40% to 107,000 TEU.
Sharifov also emphasized the importance of international cooperation on digitalizing border crossings and harmonizing customs procedures, in particular coordination between Central Asian and South Caucasus countries, and called on partner countries for joint activity in this area.
The Zangezur Corridor is a transport route planned to connect mainland Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, with further access to Turkey and Europe. Part of the route will pass through Armenia (42 km). It is expected that Azerbaijan will complete the creation of railway and road infrastructure for the Zangezur Corridor in 2026.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev previously said that the launch of the Zangezur Corridor could be possible by the end of 2028. The level of cargo transportation along it is estimated at 15 million tonnes per year.
