Daily gas consumption in Russia reaches highest level in Feb for fourth consecutive day
MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - The daily volume of gas delivered to consumers in Russia via Gazprom's Unified Gas Supply System hit a new record for February on each of the first four days of the month.
"This is the fourth consecutive day that daily gas supplies to Russian consumers via the Unified Gas Supply System have hit a record volume for the month of February due to the freezing temperatures. The new daily maximum for February is 1835.2 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas, on February 4," the company wrote.
This figure is just slightly short of the absolute record for gas supplies to the Russian market - 1839.6 mcm at the end of January.
Delivery via Gazprom's gas transportation system is reliable, partly thanks to underground gas storage facilities, the gas company said.
Most of the gas supplied by Gazprom to Russian consumers is delivered by companies in Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Group. The group's CEO, Sergei Gustov, said, "Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Group is responsible for over 33 million subscribers today as well as over 380,000 enterprises and social infrastructure sites, and it is important for us to deliver natural gas reliably and seamlessly to all categories of consumers. The extreme frosts which are now covering Central Russia, Siberia and the North Caucasus necessitate special working conditions for gas companies - emergency brigades are on call constantly and working alongside regional authorities on a daily basis."
Air temperatures, primarily during the heating season, are the main factor determining consumption volumes and, correspondingly, gas production. The very warm winter of 2024-2025 had a significant impact on production for the remaining part of 2025, as less gas was required to replenish reserves in storage during the summer. The freezing temperatures at the beginning of 2026 will boost production for the whole of the coming year.
The Unified Gas Supply System (UGSS) is a network of trunk pipelines belonging to Gazprom and covering the European part of Russia and Siberia up to Altai and Kuzbass. Gas is supplied to regions further east through autonomous gas transportation systems which will also be joined to the UGSS in future.
