Russia's gas consumption at all-time high amid freezing temperatures in Jan - Gazprom

MOSCOW. Feb 2 (Interfax) - Gas consumption in Russia reached an all-time high amid freezing temperatures in January 2026, Gazprom reported.

"Gazprom reported that gas supply from Russia's Unified Gas Supply System (UGSS) was higher than it has ever been in the month of January. Preliminary data show that Russian consumers were supplied with 51.275 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas. In the 14 days from January 15 to January 28, gas supply was at its all-time maximum level for these dates. The previous record was 50.971 bcm of gas supplied in January 2024," the company wrote.

Specialists from Gazprom said that the company's gas transportation system continued to supply gas reliably, in part thanks to underground storage facilities.

The company said that it had created an operational gas reserve of 73.17 bcm in Russia's storage facilities for the winter of 2025/2026, an all-time record for the national gas industry.

Air temperatures, primarily during the heating season, are the main factor determining consumption volumes and, correspondingly, gas production. The very warm winter of 2024-2025 had a significant impact on production for the remaining part of 2025, as less gas was required to replenish reserves in storage during the summer.

The Unified Gas Supply System is a network of trunk pipelines belonging to Gazprom and covering the European part of Russia and Siberia up to Altai and Kuzbass. Gas is supplied to regions further east through autonomous gas transportation systems which will also be joined to the UGSS in future.
