Organized sector of Russia's agro industry produces 7.6 mln tonnes of vegetables in 2025 - Agriculture Ministry
MOSCOW. Jan 26 (Interfax) - Production of open- and closed-field vegetables in Russia's organized agricultural sector totaled 7.6 million tonnes in 2025, the Agriculture Ministry said, citing preliminary data.
"The volumes of vegetable production largely meet the country's domestic needs. As a result, the Russian Federation closely approached the food security doctrine's target for self-sufficiency in vegetable production at 89.6% in 2025, with the threshold being 90%," the ministry said.
The Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) previously reported that the organized sector also produced 7.6 million tonnes of vegetables in 2024.
The Agriculture Ministry notes that producer prices for a number of products are currently even lower than they were a year ago regarding the market price situation. Specifically, the retail price for cucumbers has decreased 5.7% year-on-year to 143.3 rubles per kg, and tomatoes have fallen 17% to 144.3 rubles per kg. Rosstat said that retail prices for tomatoes are currently down 2.1%, and cucumber prices are at last year's level.
Agriculture Ministry data indicate that there are currently over 340 greenhouse farms operating in 76 regions, covering a total area of approximately 3,300 hectares. The majority of production is concentrated in the Central, Volga, North Caucasus, and Southern federal districts. Over 30 greenhouse vegetable production projects are planned for implementation with a combined capacity of over 157,000 tonnes of produce per year by 2027.
"The Agriculture Ministry is considering resuming preferential lending for greenhouse construction in order to further incentivize investment activity in the sector. Furthermore, subsidies per unit of output and per planting area, partial reimbursement of costs for upgrading storage facilities, and other measures are underway to develop vegetable and potato farming. This year, 3.5 billion rubles have been allocated for these purposes," according to the statement.
