EEC approves draft agreement on e-commerce within EAEU, sends document to member countries

MOSCOW. Jan 23 (Interfax) - The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has approved the draft agreement on e-commerce in goods within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and has sent it to member countries for the domestic procedures necessary for signing the document, the EEC's trade body said.

The agreement enshrines common rules for e-commerce within the EAEU's internal market. Signing the document should "reduce the risk of various barriers to the free movement of e-commerce goods," EEC Trade Minister Andrei Slepnev said.

Slepnev explained that adopting uniform rules for businesses would mean uniformity, predictability, and transparency of regulation throughout the union, the possibility to use e-document management, and reducing the administrative burden and financial costs. This means uniform standards for protecting the rights of consumers at a level no lower than in traditional trade, thus ensuring information security, protecting personal data, and limiting spam.

The agreement on electronic commerce in goods within the EAEU was drafted as part of the action plan approved in 2021 to create favorable conditions to develop e-commerce within the union.
