Ukraine's National Bank weakens hryvnia's reference exchange rate to new all-time low of UAH 43.48/$1
MOSCOW. Jan 16 (Interfax) - The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) set the hryvnia's reference exchange rate at UAH 43.4773/$1 on January 16, down UAH 0.13 from the previous day and hitting an all-time low for the second day, Ukrainian media reported with reference to the NBU.
Last year, the lowest reference exchange rate for the hryvnia, 42.4345/$1, was set on November 25, it said.
On January 15, the regulator had set the official hryvnia-dollar exchange rate for January 16 at a new minimum of UAH 43.3927/$1, weakening it by UAH 0.27 kopecks in a single day.
Since the beginning of 2026, the NBU has weakened the hryvnia to the U.S. dollar by 2.5%, compared to 0.8% for the entire previous year.
At the same time, due to the dollar's strengthening against the euro, the hryvnia's official exchange rate to the euro, whose share in Ukraine's external financing, international reserves, and public debt increased significantly last year, has gone down by 1.3% since the start of 2026, compared to 14.0% for the entire previous year.
