Foreign currency purchase by Ukrainian population down by 38.2% in 2025 YoY - NBU
MOSCOW. Jan 13 (Interfax) - Foreign currency purchases by the Ukrainian population exceeded sales in 2025, reaching the equivalent of $6.829 billion, which is 38.2% or $4.225 billion less than in 2024, Ukrainian media outlets said, citing data from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).
This outcome is due to a decrease in currency purchase by 7.7% or $2.004 billion, to $23.955 billion, while currency sales increased by 14.9% or $2.222 billion to $17.126 billion, the NBU said.
Including in December 2025, net purchase of foreign currency by the population decreased YoY by 38.8% or $464.5 million, reaching $732 million. Foreign currency purchase decreased to $2.334 billion from $2.494 billion in December 2023, while sales increased to $1.502 billion from $1.298 billion.
Ukrainians purchased and sold about $150 million more cash currency than in November 2025.
The population's net purchase of cash dollars decreased by almost 2.2 times in 2025 reaching $3.554 billion and euros only by 2.4% to the equivalent of $3.258 billion, the NBU said.
In December 2025, net purchase of dollars reached $457.8 million compared to $839.7 million YoY and euros - the equivalent of $273 million compared to $358 million, respectively.
The activity of NBU clients on the non-cash foreign currency market increased both in purchases and sales in December compared to November, the purchase volume increased by $2.27 billion to $11.355 billion and sales by $450.6 million to $8.341 billion.
Interbank transactions also increased by $2.30 billion in December in comparison with November, reaching $8.755 billion.
Non-cash foreign currency purchases by NBU clients grew by $631.5 million YoY and sales by $1.07 billion. Interbank transactions increased by $794 million.
The official hryvnia against U.S. dollar exchange rate weakened insignificantly by 0.8% or 35 kopecks to UAH 42.39/$1 throughout 2025
At the same time, euro considerably increased in price amid dollar's weakening on the international markets, by 13.5% or UAH 5.93 to UAH 49.86/1 euro.
As reported, the NBU's net foreign currency interventions increased by $1.573 billion in December compared to November, reaching $4.461. It was less than in December 2024, when they amounted to $5.284 billion.
