Kamaz launches presales of Russian electric car Atom
MOSCOW. Dec 12 (Interfax) - A special presale program for Russia's first line of "Atom" electric cars, the pre-series production of which began in late November at the Moskvich plant, has been presented in Naberezhnye Chelny during a board meeting of PJSC Kamaz , which is participating in the project.
The participants of the presentation were Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov, also chairman of the automobile manufacturer's board of directors, Kamaz CEO Sergei Kogogin, JSC Kama CEO Igor Povarazdnuyk and members of the board. The electric car was test-driven at the Kamaz Science and Technology Center.
"I congratulate the Atom project team on getting to the final strait. This is a concrete example of our capabilities for creating new high-tech products - from engineering solutions to production - in this instance, for the automobile market. Atom has grown from an idea into a real product, which is now completing the testing stage and is getting ready to enter the market. Today, we are already launching the presale of the electric car. With the support of the Rostec state corporation and thanks to the personal involvement of Kamaz CEO Segrei Kogogin, the developers have been able to create an up-to-date model for environmentally friendly light urban transport. The project has been implemented on its own dedicated platform, with Russian-developed batteries, software and digital architecture," Chemezov is quoted as saying in a statement from Kamaz.
Kogogin said that the production of the Atom electric cars would be "another step in the reinforcement of Russia's technological independence and the authority of Russian engineering". The employees of Kamaz will have the opportunity to become the first owners of the Atom cars and purchase them under special conditions.
"The visionary project, which was launched in 2021 by Sergei Anatolyevich Kogogin and the Atom team, reached an important landmark today - the sale of Russia's first ever mass-produced electric cars has been launched. It was precisely Kamaz which helped our startup to get to the pre-series stage, and Atom is therefore launching with great joy and gratitude a special reservation program for the employees of the automobile giant," CEO of Kama JSC Povarazdnuyk said.
PJSC Kamaz employees are now able to reserve an Atom car under special terms, as well as secure a starting price for the vehicle and receive a benefits package which includes access to paid subscriptions and services of Atom, a commemorative limited edition key, a comprehensive service program and a prepaid charge package of 3,000 kW.
The launch of Atom presales was timed to coincide with the beginning of the pre-series assembly of the Atom at the Moskvich plant in late November. "Fully-fledged pre-series models have been created using the very technologies and standards which will be used in mass production, confirming that the project is ready to enter the market," Kamaz said in a press release.
The Atom electric car product is being implemented by JSC Kama, which was registered in the summer of 2021 with the participation of Kogogin. Later on, Kamaz itself became a shareholder in the company and Rosatom became a partner in the project. Other participants include the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).
The beginning of mass production of the Atom at Moskvich was scheduled for 2025, but has now been postponed to next year. The manufacturer has said that it wants to supply cars to million-plus cities for taxi companies and carsharing.
The PJSC Kamaz board meeting on Friday, during which the Atom presentation was given, covered issues such as the situation on the automobile market, sales results for the first 10 months of 2025, the Kamaz group's business plans for 2026 and the approval of its strategic development program to 2030 with a forecast up to 2036.
