Slovak president assesses prospects for cooperation with Azerbaijan on energy diversification

BAKU. Dec 9 (Interfax) - Slovakia is interested in building a strong strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, Peter Pellegrini, President of the Slovak Republic, said after meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during his visit to the country.

"Azerbaijan is the largest economy in the South Caucasus. It is located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe and is rich in energy resources. Azerbaijan can play a leading role for Slovakia. We are talking about diversifying our energy supplies - oil and natural gas," Pellegrini said in a joint press statement with Aliyev, the transcript of which was posted on his official website.

He said experts form the two countries would find a solution that allows Slovakia to benefit from Azerbaijan's resources.

"Azerbaijan and Slovakia are friendly countries. Slovakia views Azerbaijan as a partner of strategic importance in the region in which it is located," Pellegrini said.

Trade is increasing, and some potential remains untapped, he said.

According to the program for the visit, posted on the Slovak president's website, Aliyev will hold talks with Chairman of the Slovak National Council Richard Rasi and Prime Minister Robert Fico on Tuesday. Aliyev and Fico are due to sign memorandums of understanding and cooperation in foreign affairs, culture, defense, food security and trade and industry.
