Kyrgyzstan interested in participating in Central Asia-Azerbaijan energy corridor project

BAKU. Dec 9 (Interfax) - Kyrgyzstan has expressed interest in participating in the Central Asia-Azerbaijan Trans-Caspian green energy corridor project, according to a statement from the Azerbaijani government following the sixth meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission on economic and humanitarian cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.

"During the meeting, a number of important agreements were reached aimed at further expanding economic ties, diversifying trade turnover and deepening cooperation between business circles," the statement said.

The parties considered opportunities for creating a trade and logistics center in Kyrgyzstan, organizing business missions and strengthening the exchange of information, as well as cooperation as part of green transition initiatives.

"In the energy sector, an agreement was reached to continue mutual cooperation on implementing the roadmap for 2024-2025, expanding cooperation between SOCAR and Kyrgyzneftegas, and Kyrgyzstan's participation in the Central Asia-Azerbaijan green energy corridor project," the statement said.

In the transport sector, the parties discussed digitalizing the Middle Corridor (the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route), simplifying customs procedures, the prospects of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project for the region, utilizing the Baku port's capabilities and increasing transit shipments.

"The meeting also discussed cooperation in ecology, digital development, cybersecurity, healthcare, social protection, public services, architecture and urban planning and the banking sector, and new areas of cooperation were identified," the statement said.

As part of the visit to Azerbaijan, the delegation headed by Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister Bakyt Torobayev visited a plant for processing used motor and industrial oils and producing base oils at Sumgait Industrial Park. On Tuesday, the delegation will familiarize itself with the activities of the Baku Shipyard and the Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery.

An agreement on a strategic partnership in the development and transmission of green energy between the Azerbaijani, Kazakh and Uzbek governments was signed by the heads of the three states on November 13, 2024. The energy operators of the three countries, OJSC Azerenerji, Kazakhstan's KEGOC and Uzbekistan's NES, signed a document on June 1, 2025, establishing Yasil Dehliz Birliyi LLC (Green Corridor Union) to implement the Trans-Caspian Central Asia-Azerbaijan green energy corridor project.

An energy cable laid along the bottom of the Caspian Sea will become an integral part of the energy bridge project from Central Asia via the Caspian and Black Seas to Europe.
