Russia's Arctic development project, creation of Trans-Arctic Corridor presented to Putin
MURMANSK. Nov 24 (Interfax) - Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis, Chairman of the State Council Commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic, during a meeting on Monday presented the comprehensive project to develop the Arctic and create the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok to President Vladimir Putin.
"In fulfilling your instructions following your visit to Murmansk for the International Arctic Forum, our State Council Commission on the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic has prepared a proposal for comprehensively developing the Arctic," Chibis said, adding that the project was developed jointly with the Russian Maritime Board.
Chibis recalled that the Arctic currently accounts for up to 10% of Russia's GDP despite only being home to 2% of the country's population.
"The Arctic is the foundation of Russia's security, economy, and transport sovereignty," Chibis emphasized.
As reported, Putin instructed the government, Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation, VEB and the relevant State Council Commission during the Arctic: Territory of Dialogue International Forum in March this year to approve a financial, economic, and organizational development model for the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor by August 1.
