Ukraine's grain harvest drops 4.6%, oilseed harvest down 12.6% YoY in 2025 season
MOSCOW. Nov 21 (Interfax) - Ukrainian farmers threshed 50.93 million tonnes of grain and leguminous crops from 10.23 million hectares as of November 21, 2025, or 88% of the total area under these crops, Ukrainian media reported citing a statement from the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture.
Ukrainian farmers had threshed 53.4 million tonnes of grain and 19.5 million tonnes of oilseeds by November 21, 2024. Thus, this year's figures are lower by 4.6% and 12.6%, respectively, primarily due to the late start of corn harvesting.
A total of 20.84 million tonnes of corn were threshed from 3.12 million hectares as of November 21, 2025 versus 23.6 million tonnes from 3.7 million hectares by around the same date last year, the statement said.
As for wheat, its harvest is slightly higher than last year's - 22.96 million tonnes from 5.05 million hectares compared to 22.40 million tonnes from 4.9 million hectares, while the barley harvest is slightly lower - 5.42 million tonnes from 1.36 million hectares compared to 5.6 million tonnes from 1.41 million hectares.
The harvest of peas this year is significantly higher - 672,500 tonnes from 275,100 hectares compared to 469,000 tonnes from 212,300 hectares last year, while buckwheat and millet are still much lower - 82,400 tonnes and 62,100 tonnes, respectively, against 131,700 tonnes and 161,300 tonnes, respectively.
The harvest of other grains and leguminous crops as of November 21, 2025 stood at 896,500 tonnes from 327,600 hectares versus 1 million tonnes last year.
As regards oilseeds, 17.05 million tonnes were harvested as of November 21, including sunflower from 92% of the sown area, and soybeans from 96%. Rapeseed harvesting has been completed - 3.31 million tonnes this year versus 3.5 million tonnes last year from an almost equal area of around 1.3 million hectares.
Farmers are still gathering soybeans and sunflower, but the pace of this harvesting campaign is still considerably slower than last year. In particular, 4.72 million tonnes of soybeans were harvested from 1.99 million hectares this year versus 6 million tonnes from 2.6 million hectares in 2024. The figure for sunflower stands at 8.92 million tonnes from 4.79 million tonnes in 2025 compared with 10.1 million tonnes from 4.9 million hectares last year.
This year, 9.96 million tonnes of sugar beet were dug up on an area of 186,000 hectares, or 94% of the area under this crop, versus 12 million tonnes from 251,200 hectares last year.
In the Inflation Report, published in October, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) raised its grain and legumes harvest forecast for 2025 to 61.5 million tonnes from 57.9 million tonnes in the July report, while for oilseeds it cut its estimate to 19.3 million tonnes from 21 million tonnes.
According to NBU data, Ukraine's grain harvest dropped to 56.2 million tonnes in 2024 from 59.8 million tonnes in 2023. The oilseed harvest also declined from 21.7 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes.
