Emirati companies Masdar, AMEA Power to build 500 MW energy storage systems in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT. Nov 6 (Interfax) - The Uzbek Energy Ministry has signed agreements with UAE companies Masdar and AMEA Power for constructing energy storage systems with a total capacity of 500 MW in Uzbekistan's Navoi region.

The documents were signed following negotiations between Uzbek Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov and the heads of these companies as part of the international forum ENACT Majlis in Abu Dhabi, the Energy Ministry's press service said.

"An agreement was signed with Masdar for constructing an energy storage system with a capacity of 300 MW/600 MWh and with AMEA Power with a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh," the press service said.

The project aims to increase the stability of the energy system and develop infrastructure for the storage of green energy.

The contract amounts were not specified.

During the events, Mirzamakhmudov held meetings with UAE Industry and Advanced Technology Minister Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei and with the heads of a number of companies, the press service said.

"The negotiations discussed the progress of implementing current projects, the achieved results, and further plans for the development of green energy and the oil and gas industry of Uzbekistan and the UAE," it said.

To date, five solar power plants and one wind power plant with a total capacity of 1,247 MW, as well as an energy storage system with a capacity of 63 MW, have been commissioned in Uzbekistan in cooperation with Masdar, the Energy Ministry said. The construction of a 300 MW solar power station continues in the Kashkadarya region.

Projects for creating renewable energy generation are being implemented as part of the Uzbek government's program to diversify the country's energy balance, in particular by developing the potential of solar and wind energy to the level of 12 GW by 2030.
