Russia, Mongolia updating plans to develop railway, roadway transport corridors by 2026
MOSCOW. Oct 31 (Interfax) - Russia and Mongolia are planning to update the plans to develop railway and roadway transport corridors by the end of the year, Russia's Transport Ministry said.
The respective parties formalized the agreements at this week's meeting of the transport working group of the Russia-Mongolia intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation.
Deputy Transport Minister Alexei Shilo led the Russian side and State Secretary of the Ministry of Roads and Transport Batmunkh Nasantogtokh led the Mongolian side.
The parties exchanged views on developing the Russia-Mongolia-China economic corridor to ensure growing volumes of freight transport between the countries and Mongolia's transit potential, as well as upgrading and developing JSC Ulaanbaatar Railway (UBZhD), a Mongolia and Russia joint venture.
During the meeting of the intergovernmental commission, the Russian side cited the need to approve by the end of the year the updated program for the technical upgrade of the Ulan-Ude Railway up to 2030 in order to develop the central railway line of the Russia-Mongolia-China economic corridor that would ensure transportation of 50 million tonnes of freight by 2030.
The meeting participants also discussed flight and roadway connections between Russia and Mongolia.
"The importance to cooperate to develop highways included in the AH3 and AH4 routes of the Asian Highway Network was noted. The parties also agreed by the end of November 2025 to exchange information on plans to develop highways included in the AH3 and AH4 routes of the Asian Highway Network," Russia's Transport Ministry said.
