Orenburg GPP resumes intake of gas from Karachaganak field - Kazakh ministry
ASTANA. Oct 22 (Interfax) - Russia's Orenburg Gas Processing Plant (OGPP) has resumed accepting gas from the Karachaganak field in Kazakhstan, Kazakh Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said.
"They've started receiving gas. I think they've started accepting 200,000 [cubic meters per hour], we'll slowly restore. It seems everything's alright. We will also restore production, since they've already started accepting gas," Akkenzhenov told reporters on Wednesday.
As reported, an emergency situation occurred at the Orenburg GPP on October 19, 2025, following a UAV attack, prompting the plant to temporarily halt acceptance of raw gas from the Karachaganak field. Because of this, the field operator "reduced production in a controlled manner," the Kazakh Energy Ministry said.
The Energy Ministry said the country's gas supply has not been affected and that gas deliveries to domestic consumers continue as usual.
Gazprom and KazMunayGas have been cooperating since 2002 as part of the joint commercial enterprise KazRosGas. This joint venture was created on a parity basis to purchase gas from the Karachaganak field, process it at the Orenburg GPP, and sell it to consumers in Kazakhstan and Russia.
A long-term gas sales agreement for gas from the Karachaganak field was signed between Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. and KazRosGas in 2007. In 2015, the agreement was extended until 2038 (with a volume of up to 9 billion cubic meters per year).
The Karachaganak field is one of the largest in the world. Its oil reserves amount to 1.2 billion tonnes and gas reserves amount to 1.35 trillion cubic meters.
