Elga Group proposes building Kankunskaya HPP in Yakutia with capacity of 1 GW - deputy PM's press service
MOSCOW. Oct 7 (Interfax) - Elga Group has come forward with an initiative to build the Kankunskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant in Yakutia with a capacity of 1 GW, according to the press service of Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev following a Far Eastern Federal District meeting with the participation of regional leaders.
"This project was developed back in Soviet times. For various reasons, the plant was not built, and now the Elga company has come forward with an initiative to build the facility with a capacity of 1 GW using private investment within a fairly short timeframe," the press service quoted the head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolayev, as saying.
The general scheme for locating electric power facilities until 2042 envisages the construction of five HPPs in the Far East, in particular the Kankunskaya HPP in Yakutia with a capacity of 1 GW and a commissioning date in 2036.
In the 2010s, RusHydro considered constructing the Kankunskaya HPP. The HPP could have become part of the Russia-Japan energy bridge discussed at the time.
The Elga company is developing the Elginskoye coal deposit in Yakutia, one of the world's largest coking coal deposits with reserves exceeding 2.2 billion tonnes. The direct owner of the license for this deposit is the company Elgaugol, which is managed by Elga.
