Kazakh president, Cameco CEO discuss prospects for cooperation in uranium sector

ASTANA. Sept 22 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks with CEO of Canada-based Cameco Corporation Tim Gitzel during a working visit to New York, the presidential press service said in a statement.

Tokayev and Gitzel discussed the prospects for cooperation in the uranium sector.

Tokayev described Cameco as a long-term and reliable partner for NAC Kazatomprom. Since it entered the Kazakh market, Cameco has invested more than $500 million in Kazakhstan and facilitate technology transfers to the country, according to the statement.

Kazakhstan's energy sector is entering a new development stage, where the goal is to build three nuclear power plants, Tokayev said. Kazakhstan is interested in innovative methods used in the nuclear power sector.

Gitzel, in turn, briefed Tokayev on the current operations and plans of the Inkai joint venture, which has been developing the Inkai uranium deposit in Kazakhstan's Turkistan region for more than 25 years already.
