European Commission sees no threat to EU's power supply after Ukrainian attack on Druzhba pipeline

BRUSSELS. Aug 19 (Interfax) - The European Commission does not have sufficient information on the attack on the Druzhba pipeline supplying oil to Hungary and Slovakia, but does not see any risk for the European Union's power supply in it, European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova said.

"We have no clear information who attacked the interconnector. However, we emphasize the importance of maintaining energy security. We are in touch with the Hungarian and Slovakian authorities," Hrncirova said at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.

"And what is important, is the suspension does not affect the security of supply, which was always a priority for the European Commission," she said.

On August 18, media outlets reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had attacked a substation of the Druzhba pipeline pumping oil to Hungary and Slovakia in the early hours of Monday.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on a social network that responsibility for the suspension of oil supplies from Russia to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline rests with Kiev.

"Ukraine has once again attacked the oil pipeline leading to Hungary, cutting off supplies," Szijjarto said on X.
