Port of Klaipeda begins construction of green hydrogen bunkering station, production to begin in 2026
MOSCOW. Aug 19 (Interfax) - The Port of Klaipeda in Estonia has begun building a green hydrogen production and bunkering station, the first in the Baltic states.
All construction and installation work is planned for completion in February 2026 and production is scheduled to be launched by the spring, the port said in a statement.
The station is expected to produce 127 tonnes of hydrogen per year, part of which will be used as fuel for the country's first vessel running on eco-friendly hydrogen. The construction of the vessel is currently nearing completion.
The station is estimated to cost around 12 million euros, of which half will be funded by the EU's NextGenerationEU Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The Lithuanian company Gevalda won an open tender to become the building contractor for the project.
Klaipeda has the largest port in the Baltic states, handling 35.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, up 8% from 2023.
