Russian Industry and Trade Ministry sees prospects for using renewable energy equipment in Arctic, NSR zone

MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Renewable energy solutions being developed in Russia could eventually assist the country in developing the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Director of the Department of Machinery for the Fuel and Energy Complex at the Industry and Trade Ministry Mikhail Kuznetsov said.

"We haven't forgotten about power generation from renewable sources. This topic has been allocated a separate federal project. We are talking about at least two types of generation - wind and solar. Here, we also aim to ensure our country's technological sovereignty, both in terms of solar power plant efficiency - matching the world's best practices - and in mastering the production of wind power installations designed for Arctic conditions," Kuznetsov said during a press conference at the TNF 2025 industrial and energy forum.

"This should help us in our objectives for developing the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic," he said.

Russian authorities have positioned the Northern Sea Route as a new international transport alternative, highlighting that it is 30% shorter than the Europe-Asia route via the Suez Canal.
