Moldovan energy regulator revokes Gazprom subsidiary's license to supply gas to country
CHISINAU. Aug 4 (Interfax) - The board of directors of Moldova's National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) on Monday approved a decision to revoke the license of JSC Moldovagaz (over 60% of the shares of which are controlled by Gazprom ) to supply natural gas to the country, the ANRE said.
De facto, the function of supplying gas to Moldova will pass to the state company Energocom starting from September 1 this year.
"Taking into account that the procedure of terminating the activities of JSC Moldovagaz as a supplier and, accordingly, connecting around 800,000 consumers to Energocom represents a unique challenge for all parties involved in the process, the agency decided that the actual moment of the supplier change should occur on 01.09.2025," the ANRE said.
In this regard, the regulator obligated Moldovagaz and Energocom to take the necessary organizational measures to ensure the continuity of gas supplies by the end of August. According to the ANRE's decision, Energocom will assume the obligation and functions of ensuring natural gas supplies to end consumers.
Previously, Moldovagaz officially informed the ANRE of its inability to separate the functions of supply and transportation of gas by the regulator's set deadline (August 1, 2025), citing the lack of consensus among majority shareholders and that this decision was beyond the authority of the company's management. At the same time, the regulator noted the company's readiness to provide the organizational, logistical and operational measures necessary to ensure uninterrupted natural gas supplies to end consumers.
The ANRE also said that it will determine the natural gas supplier for Transdniestria by September 1.
In turn, Moldovagaz JSC Acting Board Chairman Vadim Ceban said that the company had taken note of the regulator's decision to revoke the license and transfer the gas supplier functions to the state company Energocom as of September 1.
"In the near future, both companies will publish information on reading data on natural gas consumption in August, as well as on the procedure for its invoicing in such a way that this transition does not negatively affect consumers. At the same time, if the newly appointed supplier, JSC Energocom, requests assistance regarding billing and customer service, the parties will hold negotiations and sign an appropriate agreement to ensure a high-quality service for consumers, whose number currently exceeds 830,000," Ceban said on his Telegram channel.
