Nizhny Novgorod Region, Bashkiria seeking to have nuclear power plants - Rosatom CEO Likhachev

MOSCOW. July 30 (Interfax) - The Nizhny Novgorod Region and Bashkiria would like to host nuclear power plants, Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation CEO Alexei Likhachev said during a meeting of the state council commission on the energy sector.

"Not all issues have been resolved at the regional level yet," Likhachev said, noting that the Nizhny Novgorod Region and Bashkiria "say that they need a nuclear power plant."

Likhachev also said that the matter requires approval at the regulatory level.

There are expectations that nuclear power plants will occupy 24% in the energy balance by 2042, Rosatom First Deputy CEO Andrei Petrov said in a presentation during the meeting.

The general plan for placing electric power facilities up to 2042 has not included the construction of nuclear facilities in these regions. The general plan envisages commissioning 38 power units and decommissioning 16 units. Rosatom will also have seven new regions with nuclear capacity, namely Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, the Primorsk Territory, and the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), as well as the Irkutsk, Tomsk, and Chelyabinsk regions.
