Russia supplies 2.9 mln tonnes of LNG to Japan in H1, 251,000 tonnes in June

MOSCOW. July 17 (Interfax) - Russia supplied 2.897 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas to Japan in H1 2025, down 3% year-on-year, the Japanese Finance Ministry said.

This included 251,000 tonnes in June, reflecting the fact that LNG plants undergo maintenance in the summer.

Russia's bulk LNG producers are Sakhalin Energy, owned by Gazprom , Mitsui and Mitsubishi; and Yamal LNG, owned by Novatek , TotalEnergies and China's CNPC and SRF; and Cryogas-Vysotsk and Gazprom LNG Portovaya on the Baltic coast.

The ministry said Japan, one of the world's biggest importers, bought an overall 31.145 million tonnes of LNG in H1 2025, down 0.8% from 32.408 million tonnes a year previously and down 0.3% in average daily terms, reflecting the 2024 leap year.

June imports fell 2% year-on-year to 4.44 million tonnes. LNG was sold in Asia at a premium over European markets in May and June, affecting the behavior of the region's importers.
