U.S. sanctions hindering Paks II NPP project lifted - Hungarian FM

WASHINGTON. June 30 (Interfax) - The United States has lifted the sanctions hindering the Paks II NPP project in Hungary, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Sunday.

"Luckily, a president who deems Hungary to be his friend has been in the White House since January. Therefore, the U.S. authorities have scrapped the sanctions on investments in the Paks II NPP," European media quoted Szijjarto as saying.

The previous U.S. administration imposed sanctions on the financial sector in 2024, thus hindering project financing, he said.

Russia's Atomstroyexport launched the main phase of construction of the Paks II NPP in Hungary in late August 2023.

In late August 2022, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued a permit for building the fifth and sixth reactor units to Rosatom. The European Commission approved amendments to the agreements on the construction and financing of the facility in May 2023.
