Georgian economy minister resigns, to become PM's chief advisor

TBILISI. June 24 (Interfax) - First Deputy Prime Minister and Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili has resigned and will take up the position of chief economic advisor to the Georgian prime minister and secretary of the Economic Council.

"To improve the planning and implementation system of the country's economic policy, we have decided to strengthen the Economic Council. For this purpose, the functions and composition of the Economic Council will be revised, and Levan Davitashvili will assume the position of chief economic advisor to the Georgian prime minister and secretary of the Economic Council," Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was quoted by the government's office as saying.

"Managing the ministry involves a daily, difficult routine, and freeing Davitashvili from this routine will allow him to ensure even greater success in further accelerating the country's economic growth, attracting investment and implementing other relevant effective measures," Kobakhidze said.

Davitashvili served as Georgian economy minister from February 2022, succeeding Natia Turnava, the current head of the National Bank of Georgia. He held the position of first deputy prime minister from February 2024.

The post of economy minister will be taken up by Mariam Kvrivishvili. "She served as deputy economy minister, overseeing the tourism and civil aviation sectors," Kobakhidze said.
