Rosatom plans to build two VVER-1200 power plant units in Kazakhstan

MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - The Rosatom State Corporation signed a roadmap with Kazakhstan for the construction of two VVER-1200 nuclear power plant units, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said in an interview with Rossiya-24 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"The corresponding roadmap, the main provisions of the general contract for the construction of two new VVER-1200 power units," Likhachev said regarding the documents signed with Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants LLP and AtomStroyExport, an engineering subsidiary of Rosatom, signed a framework agreement earlier on Friday outlining key cooperation principles for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.

The plant will take around 11 years to build and could be finished in 2035-2036.

The Kazakh Nuclear Energy Agency in June chose Rosatom to lead a consortium to build the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, adding that a Russian state export loan was under consideration. Intergovernmental agreements and contracts for building Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant will be signed in November 2025.
