Rosatom suggests constructing floating NPP at first stage with Indonesia, high-power NPP at second stage
MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - Russia's Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation is discussing the possibility of constructing nuclear power plants with Indonesia, proposing to build a floating nuclear power plant at the first stage and a high-power nuclear power plant at the second stage, Rosatom Deputy CEO Andrei Nikipelov said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025.
"We are pleased that Indonesia takes nuclear energy seriously and is interested in it. Given its geographical location and that it is an island nation, we are making a proposal that consists of several parts," Nikipelov said.
He said the quickest way to obtain nuclear energy was to use floating power units. This is fully consistent with Indonesia's plans to have 250 MW of nuclear energy by 2032, 7 GW by 2040 and 35 GW by 2060.
"So our proposal is to start with the use of floating power units. They require minimal investment from the Indonesian side, because we will use the entire Russian infrastructure for changing fuel. So no major capital investments are needed. And the second step is to build high-power nuclear power plants," Nikipelov said.
Rosatom has analyzed the possibility of integrating nuclear energy into the Indonesian energy system and identified potential locations for floating and high-power nuclear power plants.
"We put this into the concept and handed it over to the Indonesian side. Along with the concept, we proposed a roadmap for how our cooperation could develop. At the moment, we are waiting for the Indonesian government to decide which path we should take," he said.
Nikipelov said Rosatom was already ready to organize a pre-feasibility study. "We are 100% ready," he said.
