New international airport opens in Azerbaijan

BAKU. May 28 (Interfax) - A new international airport has been opened in Azerbaijan's Lachin district in the southwest of the country, according to the presidential website.

It is Azerbaijan's ninth international airport. Its runway is 3,000 meters long, with six aircraft parking spaces on the apron. The airport will accommodate various types of aircraft, including cargo planes.

The terminal, covering approximately 6,000 square meters, is designed to handle 200 passengers per hour.

Lachin Airport is the highest-altitude airport in the country, located 1,738 meters above sea level.

The opening ceremony on Wednesday was attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On May 26, 2025, the Azerbaijani government granted Lachin Airport international status.
