Satellite Internet should become accessible on entire territory of Russia in 2 years - PM

MOSCOW. May 26 (Interfax) - Satellite Internet should become accessible nationwide in two years, the orbital satellite group will need to be reinforced for that, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said.

"We have a big country, not everywhere it is technically possible to put optic fiber lines to ensure uniform provision of services (communication), therefore, special attention should be given to reinforcing the orbital group, which will make it possible to receive fast and cheap Internet in the most remote territories, along motorways and railway lines," Mishustin said at a strategic session on the development of the communications sector on Monday.

"Will do everything necessary to make satellite Internet accessible nationwide in two years, which is extremely important not only for organizing services in small populated areas, but also for the development of the Arctic regions, including the Northern Sea Route," he said.

Massive production of spacecraft will need to start for that purpose, Mishustin said. Almost 107 billion rubles is envisaged in the national project Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State for these purposes, he said.

"It is necessary to focus on modernization of the geostationary group, which makes it possible to transmit the television signal to large territories and provide large infrastructure facilities with communication," Mishustin said.

Domestic developments should be used in that, he said.
