Zelensky invites Trump to sign free trade agreement - Ukrainian trade rep

MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has sent a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump outlining new opportunities for cooperation, including a proposal to sign a free trade agreement, Ukrainian media said, citing Deputy Economy Minister and Trade Representative Taras Kachka said.

"As far as I know, these are the proposals put forth by Zelensky to Trump in that letter. Consequently, it will be the next stage of our communication," Kachka said at the 'Trade War: Art of Protection' conference in Kiev on Tuesday.

Kiev is interested in such an agreement even though the U.S. is not Ukraine's largest trading partner, he said.

"But we are interested in free trade agreements with all G7 countries. We already have them with the UK, Canada, the EU. We now need them [free trade agreements] with the U.S. and Japan," Kachka said.

"In my opinion, it may be interesting for the U.S. as well," he said.

Kachka said earlier that Ukrainian exports to the U.S. market grew 67% year-on-year to $869 million in 2024, accounting for 2.08% of Ukraine's exports last year. Imports from the U.S. stood at $3.4 billion, or 4.95% of all imports to the Ukrainian market in 2024.
