Russia, Vatican enhanced joint protection of traditional spiritual values under Pope Francis - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. April 21 (Interfax) - Russia was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Pope Francis and offers its heartfelt condolences to the Holy See and to every Catholic, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The late pontiff will be remembered as an outstanding religious figure and statesman, who stayed true to the ideals of humanism and moral principles in world politics, whose untiring service for the benefit of peace and justice earned him the respect of hundreds of millions of people - both Catholics and representatives of other faiths," the ministry said in a statement published on its website on Monday.
"During his pontificate, Russia and the Holy See consistently developed a constructive dialogue, enhancing joint efforts to protect traditional spiritual and moral values and to build a just world order that would ensure the harmonious and equal co-existence of all countries and peoples," it said.
"Russia hopes that the spiritual legacy of the pope will serve as the foundation for those who will continue the pontiff's cause, for those who share his commitment to strengthening peace, security and stability. The Russian side offers its heartfelt condolences to the Holy See and to every Catholic in whose heart the memory of Pope Francis lives on," the statement said.
