Transmashholding's NELP to produce prototype 2ES9 electric locomotive for Russia's Eastern Polygon in 2025
ROSTOV-ON-DON. April 17 (Interfax) - The Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant (NELP), part of Transmashholding (TMH) plans to produce a prototype of the new 2ES9 electric locomotive in 2025, the Rostov region governor's press service said.
Acting Governor Yury Slyusar recently visited NELP. During their meeting, TMH CEO Kirill Lipa said that the company is investing in upgrading NELP's technological equipment, producing new product samples and receiving government support.
"As part of NELP's investment program, production of the new 2ES9 electric locomotive is planned this year. The technical preparation of production is currently underway, with the goal of manufacturing a prototype. This work will receive 445 million rubles in investment," the press service said.
Since 2024, NELP has been implementing a 2.8 billion ruble investment project to modernize its painting facilities, with 2 billion rubles allocated by Russia's Industrial Development Fund, it said. The project has already completed construction of a compressor station and is currently renovating production areas and installing equipment. Modernization is scheduled for completion in 2026, increasing painting capacity from 550 to 700 locomotive sections annually.
"The Rostov region government has always supported the plant through tax benefits and loan subsidies. We will continue providing all necessary assistance," Slyusar was quoted as saying.
Previously, the corporate newspaper Gudok reported that the 12-axle AC electric locomotive 2ES9 will operate trains at speeds up to 120 km/h. Compared to the Ermak 25 kV AC mainline electric locomotive with four-axle sections, the 2ES9 features increased power. It is designed for operation on Russian Railways' Eastern Polygon.
The Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant is a major producer of mainline and industrial electric locomotives, with most products manufactured according to orders from Russian Railways.
Transmashholding is Russia's largest manufacturer of rolling stock for rail transport.
