Amount of cash circulating in Ukraine down 2.1% in Q1 2025 - NBU

MOSCOW. April 15 (Interfax) - The amount of cash in circulation on Ukraine dropped 2.1% to UAH 805.1 billion in January-March 2025, local media said, citing statistics from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

"This is due to seasonal factors. Traditionally, cash that was issued in previous periods is withdrawn from circulation in the first quarter [of the year]," media outlets quoted the NBU as saying in a press release.

There were 2.51 billion banknotes for a total amount of UAH 796.8 billion in circulation as of April 1, 2025 against 2.70 billion banknotes for UAH 773.2 billion in circulation a year earlier. The number of banknotes decreased 3.4% in Q1 2025.

According to the NBU, the number of coins, excluding commemorative and investment coins, went up 0.4% to 14.9 billion in Q1, having increased 2.2% over the past year.

The largest number of banknotes and coins circulating in Ukraine are 500-hryvnia banknotes (26.8% of all banknotes circulating in Ukraine) and 10-kopeck coins (27.7%). The least frequent banknotes and coins are 50-hryvnia banknotes (4.4%) and 10-hryvnia coins (1.9%).

The dynamics of the volume of banknotes and coins currently in circulation shows the highest growth rate in Q1 2025 for 1,000-hryvnia banknotes (by 3% in Q1 and by 38.2% over the past year) and for 10-hryvnia coins (by 5.4% in Q1 and by 30.7% over the past year). Such banknotes now account for 14.5% of all banknotes circulating in Ukraine and their total value is larger than that of 500-hryvnia banknotes.
