Moldova boosts petroleum product imports 4.4% in 2024

CHISINAU. March 24 (Interfax) - Moldova's imports of petroleum products in 2024 totaled 948,200 tonnes, up 4.4% compared to 2023, the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) said.

Within the structure of imports, diesel fuel deliveries amounted to 695,600 tonnes (up 4.5%), gasoline supplies totaled 195,960 tonnes (up 6.4%) and liquefied gas shipments were at 56,650 tonnes (down 2.4%).

Out of total imports, the share of diesel fuel remained unchanged from the previous year at 73.3%, the share of gasoline increased from 20.3% to 20.7% and the share of liquefied gas declined from 6.4% to 6%.

As in previous years, Romania remained Moldova's main supplier of petroleum products in 2024, accounting for 99.1% of gasoline imports, 74.1% of diesel fuel imports and 69% of liquefied gas imports, the ANRE said.

Apart from Romania, Moldova also imported diesel fuel from Egypt (7.7%), the United Arab Emirates (6.9%), Turkey (4.5%), Bulgaria (4.4%) and India (1.2%). Small amounts of diesel fuel were also imported from Greece, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other countries.

In the structure of liquefied gas imports, Russia accounted for 5.7% in 2024, Egypt - 5.5%, Algeria - 5.3%, Latvia - 5.1%, Kazakhstan - 3%, the United States - 2.6%, Poland - 1.7% and Italy - 0.8%, while other countries collectively accounted for 1.2%.

According to ANRE, There was an upward trend in the average gasoline price from the beginning of the year, peaking in April at $973.7 per tonne, up 18.4% compared to January. Subsequently, the average import price of gasoline declined, reaching its lowest point in December at $741 per tonne.

The average import price of diesel fuel peaked in February at $914.6 per tonne, then gradually declined, reaching a minimum of $743.4 per tonne in December.

The average import price of liquefied gas fluctuated from $653.79 in January to $689.87 in March, followed by a drop to $577.5 in June. After this, the price rose to $757.2 in November, marking the highest level for 2024. In December, the average import price of liquefied gas stood at $728.66 per tonne.

In 2023, Moldova imported 907,920 tonnes of petroleum products, up 5.4% compared to 2022.
