Rosneft continues Arctic research for geomodeling and assessment of Russia's continental shelf

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Rosneft continues large-scale scientific research in the Arctic, studying ecology and biodiversity and conducting geological work on Russia's continental shelf, the company said.

"This year, Rosneft has continued geological research in the Arctic. As part of a project launched in 2020, all of Russia's Arctic seas have already been covered. The goal of the expeditions is to obtain core samples to build an accurate geological model of the studied regions and assess the extent of Russia's continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean," Rosneft said.

Rosneft places significant emphasis on ecology and biodiversity conservation in the Arctic region. "Since 2012, the company has been implementing the most extensive comprehensive scientific research program in the Arctic since Soviet times. Over 50 expeditions have been conducted, and a unique array of regional data has been collected. Geological, oceanographic, hydrometeorological and environmental studies are being carried out in collaboration with key scientific institutes in the country," Rosneft said.

Research covers the waters of the northern seas, the seabed, coastal areas, glaciers, icebergs and bioindicator species. The results of years of research on the region are presented in environmental atlases by Rosneft and the non-governmental development institute Innopraktika, as well as in numerous documentary films produced with the company's support.

In addition, Rosneft is implementing a large-scale environmental project in the White Sea together with Innopraktika. As part of the expeditions, scientists retraced the route of the renowned Soviet hydrobiologist Konstantin Deryugin, who conducted research over 100 years ago. Specialists plan to gather data on the current state of the White Sea's biota and assess the changes in the region's ecosystems over the past century, Rosneft said.
