Russia receives agrement for appointment of Darchiyev as Russian ambassador to U.S.

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Russia has received agrement for the appointment of Alexander Darchiyev as Russian ambassador to the United States, he will leave for Washington shortly, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The U.S. side gave an official note with agrement for the appointment of Alexander Darchiyev, director of the Department of the North Atlantic of the Russian Foreign Ministry, to the post of new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United States of America during the consultations between the delegations of Russia and the U.S. on issues concerning normalization of the functioning of the two countries' diplomatic missions held in Istanbul on February 27," a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry website says.

"He is expected to leave for his place of service in Washington in the near future," the ministry said.

Russian-U.S. consultations on issues relating to the work of the two countries' diplomatic missions took place in Istanbul on February 27.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said after the consultations they had been businesslike, in particular, agreements had been reached on joint steps to ensure unobstructed financing of the work of the diplomatic missions and to create conditions for diplomats to fulfil their service duties. The sides agreed to continue dialogue via this channel, the ministry said earlier.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia's previous ambassador to the U.S., was relieved of his duties by a presidential decree on October 10, 2024.

Darchiyev was minister counselor at the Russian emabssy to the U.S. in 2005-2010. He was Russian ambassador to Canada between October 2014 and January 2021.
